Syndicated sitcoms heat up in winter
'Two and a Half Men' remains the top syndie comedy. 'The Big Bang Theory' has seen ratings growth thanks to a slot on TBS. Dark days and cold nights bring Christmas ratings gifts to syndication, particularly in the access hour, with offnet sitcoms and evening gameshows benefiting from bigger TV audiences in the evening.Sitcoms, in particular, tend to grow in the winter, while most daytime shows remain stable. Warner Bros.' offnet rookie "The Big Bang Theory" premiered in September at an already healthy 4.5 live-plus-same-day national household rating, according to Nielsen. By the week ending Dec. 4, "Big Bang" already had added 37% more households to reach a 6.2, including its robust primetime run on TBS.That growth is expected to continue into February sweeps, when sitcoms tend to hit their stride. Warner Bros.' "Two and a Half Men" premiered in 2007 at a 3.3. By February 2008, it had grown 66% to a 5.5. Today, "Two and a Half Men" remains syndication's leading offnet sitcom at a 6.5, on par with its fifth-season syndication premiere in September. In second and third place, Twentieth's two strong contenders, "Family Guy" and "How I Met Your Mother," also have gained since September, with "Family Guy" adding 5% for a 4.2 and "Mother" improving 11% (3.6). "Mother" also has added a run on FX, which is boosting its numbers. The rest of the genre also is up or flat, with only two veteran shows -- Twentieth's "King of the Hill" and Carsey Werner's "That '70s Show" -- declining, off 5% and 15%, respectively. Sitcoms aren't the only shows that benefit from darker days. All of the gameshows are up, with CBS Television Distribution's "Wheel of Fortune" leading all of syndication at a 7.6, up 16% and a full ratings point from its September premiere of 6.6. CTD's "Jeopardy!" also has added viewers since September, growing 14% to a 6.2. Debmar-Mercury's "Family Feud," which airs predominantly in daytime and early fringe, is continuing its ratings rise, adding 11% for a 3.1. Disney-ABC's long-running daytime quizshow "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" is flat from its season start at a 2.5. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Here, the multi-hyphenate fan fave talks about her latest foray in to the funny business of TV and what don't be surprised from her in next season.Television Guide Magazine: Just how did a pleasant girl as if you fall along with The League?Eliza Dushku: They known as, and Ron [Fox, her love] and that i had literally just viewed a lot of episodes we'd downloaded. It certainly is strange how that occurs. Something occurs your radar and so the phone rings. We are huge Curb fans, therefore we were acquainted with [executive producers] Shaun and Jackie Schaffer, plus I believe everyone knows I am a huge fan of sports. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: What have you think about the episodes you viewed?Dushku: I believe the show is really funny. I love the part-improv, part-scripted style, which isn't something I have ever really done.TV Guide Magazine: That needed to be considered a little intimidating.Dushku: It's! But, when you are doing the work with those who are so great in internet marketing...they reveal up, possess the outline from the scene ready and extremely deliver. The designers Shaun and Jackie take presctiption set every second assisting you with [all of this]. And So I think I had been more intimidated before I acquired there and recognized just how much they participate. Then you're able to just shoot a lot of things and also have the confidence that they may pick your very best stuff.TV Guide Magazine: What have they got you doing about this episode?Dushku: Kevin, who's performed by Stephen Rannazzisi, gets pressure from his wife, Jenny, to become more active and a lesser body fat ass, as she states. So she transmits him to some Krav Maga class, and that i take part in the instructor. He suspects that there's something not only teaching happening between themself and my character, but he can't tell in the beginning. Could it be Krav Maga or perhaps is she striking on him? It kind of gets worse when he takes this to his buddies to determine the things they think, only then do we discover what's really happening in the finish.TV Guide Magazine: Are you currently been trained in Krav Maga?Dushku: I'm not. However I am been trained in being physical. I'm able to have a guy lower. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: How can you look foward to comedy?Dushku: I really like it! Obviously, many people are more acquainted with me from Buffy and Doll house, and much more dramatic work. But Take It On is at there, and that i did Jay and Quiet Bob with Kevin Cruz. And it is always "the grass is eco-friendly." When you are carrying out a drama, you believe, "God, I wish to perform a comedy," and you do one and wish to make a move more dramatic. To change things up and make a move such as the League may be the ultimate.TV Guide Magazine: Can you consider doing another series?Dushku: After Doll house, I really shot a comedy pilot within the summer time which was in the producers of 2 . 5 Males. Which was if this was questionable whether that demonstrate would return, also it was this really, really fun pilot. Then 2 days prior to the upfronts, the photos of Chuck Lorre and Ashton Kutcher getting lunch together arrived on the scene also it was like 'ohhhh guy!' We thought maybe we'd get acquired, but CBS clearly filled that slot.TV Guide Magazine: I believe your Whitened Collar role the 2009 season because the Egyptologist was the very first time we had you like a outfitted-up developed.Dushku: Yeah, I had been a really outfitted up for the reason that, wasn't I? Individuals were my very own footwear, I must admit. I needed to bring my very own six-inch Prada pumps in to the mix. [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: Any chance we may help you back on the program?Dushku: They've spoken in my experience about possibly returning. Which was a lot fun...and also the show is really great since it has that mixture of the dramatic and also the comedy into it. And That I love Matt Bomer. He is a friend because the Tru Calling days. Actually, I simply found an image of Matt and Zach Galifianakis from in older days plus they both seem like babies!TV Guide Magazine: What's next for you personally?Dushku: My buddy Nate and I've got a production company, and we've been employed by eight years on our Robert Mapplethorpe project. And also over individuals eight years, after i was consistently working, it had been really challenging it finished. So we are concentrating on might developing another feature which i will most likely act in, that is really exciting in my experience. It is a dramedy. And we are focusing on a documentary on Albania - I received my Albanian citizenship this summer time - we shot a unique that could are a series. It's kind of my love letter to Albania. I am attempting to broaden my portfolio, I suppose! [Laughs]TV Guide Magazine: And individuals are actually diverse.Dushku: Yeah, I understand! I am also dealing with my mother's NGO [non-governmental organization] too. She began an organization in Northern Uganda...she's 70-years-old and it has been teaching African politics for a lot of years, but it was really her first project and I am around the board. We are attempting to develop a center there for trauma, healing, reflection and also the rehab of former child soldiers and sufferers from the war in Uganda. This is a completely different world for me personally, but it is so awesome. I had been requested to talk at Harvard a couple of several weeks ago concerning the work we are doing there. I am certainly my mother's daughter, and that is part of my existence I never reached tap directly into a lot within the two decades I had been riding the acting factor. There's a great deal I wish to do and that i seem like I've an chance to get it done now but still remain in the acting world.TV Guide Magazine: It's nice to become in a stage inside your career where one can select the jobs for you to do, huh?Dushku: I am so grateful that I've been capable of getting offers and say "This can be a awesome piece, but it is not quite things i am searching to complete.Inch It's not easy, because areas of me go "Oh, I actually want to work." 'The Five-Year Engagement' Trailer: Jason Segel and Emily Blunt Take a Long, Slow Walk Down the Aisle
Remember that first 'Muppets' teaser that looked like a generic studio rom-com, but made everyone laugh when they realized it was actually a spot for 'The Muppets'? It appears that movie has possibly been made with 'Muppets' star Jason Segel. In 'The Five-Year Engagement,' Tom (Segel) proposes to his British girlfriend Victoria (Emily Blunt). The good news? She says yes. The bad news? Hijinks ensue -- over and over again -- delaying the wedding for the titular five years. Yep, that's set-up for this one -- which Segel co-wrote with his 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' cohort Nicholas Stoller; as with that film, Stoller directs. Unfortunately, this trailer also follows the recent tradition of a trailer spoiling a movie before it's even out. Starring Segel, Blunt, Chris Pratt, Jacki Weaver and Alison Brie (with a British accent!), 'The Five-Year Engagement' hits theaters April 27, 2012. Michael Fassbender: Everyman, Chameleon, Sex Symbol
That Michael Fassbender is very the chameleon, is not he? He's just like a male Kate Winslet, effortlessly dashing between contemporary and old-timey roles. Couple of (if any) stars today are as versatile. From Spartan occasions towards the swingin' '60s, it appears as if Fassbender has handled nearly every major movie-friendly era. Therefore it is no real surprise that legendary director David Cronenberg cast Fassbender as Carl Jung in 'A Harmful Method,' which hits theaters now. Fassbender touches into his role because the conflicted mental health specialist battling together with his associations with chilled mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), unhinged patient/lover Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) and the lengthy-suffering wife, Emma (Sarah Gadon). Fassbender clearly has got the acting chops to drag off playing figures from a variety of different eras. Younger crowd has got the right search for it -- his face is equally as credible within the World war 2 drama 'Band of Brothers' because it is within the 1800s epic 'Jane Eyre.' Hopefully he is able to resist the lure of Botox treatment and facelifts that other Hollywood stars have gave in to (cough, cough, Sylvester Stallone, cough, cough, Mickey Rourke). In the end, facelifts just were not completed in the 1800s. Having seen Fassbender clothed at the begining of twentieth century poor performers in 'A Harmful Method,' we made the decision to wrangle up a gallery of his other memorable roles occur another time. Up next for Fassbender: something set later on. (OK, not necessarily. But we are able to dream! Imagine how awesome Future Fassbender would look!) Why Universal Music Sued Its Insurer Over a $14.4 Million Payment to Musicians (Analysis)
GettyChet Baker in 1961 We wonder if anybody will ever remake Double Indemnity, except this time featuring a record label that purchases an insurance policy that pays off handsomely should a songwriter be murdered on royalty issues. This one's got potential. Check out a lawsuit filed this week by Universal Music Group against one of its insurers. On Tuesday, in Los Angeles Superior Court, UMG sued the National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh for failing to reimburse $15 million needed to settle a class action lawsuit led by jazz great Chet Baker. That class action was filed in 2008 in Canada and alleged thatseveral record labels had participated in a scheme that was nicknamed "Exploit now, pay later." Until the late 1980s under Canadian law, when record labels put out compilation albums, they didn't need to get the permission of artists. Instead, they merely needed to pay compulsory mechanical royalties. Then, the country changed its law to require the permission of song artists, but according to the 2008 lawsuit, the labels continued to put out compilation albums without getting approval. Not only did they not get permission, but the record labels allegedly held back royalties. Instead, the labels marked songs onto a "pending list" for later approval and payment. According to the class action complaint, the defendant record labels estimated that monies earmarked for copyright holders on the Pending Lists was $50 million. So record labels owed $50 million, but the plaintiffs brought charges of copyright infringement, which meant potential statutory damages amounting to more than 100 times that amount. The lawsuit wasdeemed at the time to beCanada's largest ever copyright infringement case, This past January, record labels settled the case and handed over $45 million. In other words, about the same amount of money that labels were said to have acknowledged owing in the first place. At the time of the settlement, the attorney for the plaintiffs commended the labels for resolving the matter. Now, it gets interesting. This week, UMG turned to its insurance company for reimbursement of its portion of the settlement ($14.4 million) plus attorney's fees and legal costs (about $1 million). UMG says it first attempted to get National Union to pay up in 2010, when the settlement demand was first made, but the insurance carrier refused. Not wishing to face potential billions of dollars in damages, UMG decided to go along with other record companies and settle.UMG now says that National Union's failure to pay up constitutes a breach of its insurance policy to indemnify copyright claims. In other words, UMG put out albums without artist permission, held back royalties from these artists, and then finally paid out when faced with a much bigger legal threat. Now, even though the settlement money seems to cover what was claimed and acknowledged to be owed to artists, UMG is using the guise of a copyright claim to recover the money from its insurer. One might ask if record labels should just stop handing over royalties to artists altogether and let insurers pick up the tab after the inevitable copyright infringement claims come. Is UMG trying to pull an "exploit now, pay later, murder the insurer" scheme? The company didn't respond to requests for comment. 50 Years Later, Has Any Movie Pinpointed Teenage Obsession Like Splendor in the Grass?
Splendor in the Grass, Elia Kazan’s ode to teenage angst and adolescent obsession, turns 50 this Monday. The golden anniversary of William Inge’s torrid screenplay may not seem like a big deal to you, but if you haven’t seen Splendor in the Grass (which was a box office sensation in ‘61), you’ve missed out on three important film moments: 1) the performance of Natalie Wood’s career; 2) the debut of a young buck named Warren Beatty; and 3) a level of teenage hysteria that is both extreme and extremely moving. Let’s reinspect the plight of young lovers Deanie (Wood) and Bud (Beatty), who have a passionate, but problematic bond in the 1920s. They don’t quite see eye to eye on sex, Bud’s a verbally abusive, well-to-do football star, and Deanie’s an asthmatic teenybopper unprepared for the pangs of love. In this clip from early in the film, we watch the bond growing between the two. But then, at the 7:55 mark, Bud’s maniacal sexuality tears to the fore. If his cavalier use of the word “slave” wasn’t chilling enough, Deanie’s soft-spoken followup is downright eerie. Now, here’s Natalie Wood as you’ve never seen her before (if you’ve never seen this movie, that is): jilted, crazed, and nearly possessed. Deanie’s mother (Audrey Christie) doesn’t understand her downward spiral, and Deanie’s not afraid to terrify her for it. Here’s more of that breakdown, because it’s just so fabulous to watch. Yep, that’s Oscar- winner Sandy Dennis debuting as Deanie’s friend Kay in the dance scene. Finally, the movie’s conclusion — after Deanie has spent years in a mental institution — is a powerful and surprisingly subtle final note. Deanie meets up again with Bud, who is now married, and tells him that she, too, will be married to a Cincinnati man she met in the asylum. They decide they have to live their lives separately. Difficult! And real! Do you love Splendor in the Grass? Do you forgive its somewhat sedate second half? And isn’t Natalie Wood divine?

'Homeland' opens well for Showtime
Showtime received strong traction with its series debut of "Homeland" Sunday night, drawing just over a million viewers for the drama's initial telecast. The 10 p.m. airing recorded the most auds for a drama premiere since 2003's "Dead Like Me." When totaling the midnight and 2 a.m. telecasts, as well as online sampling that the cabler made available via online On Demand, "Homeland" drew a combined 2.7 million. In comparison to recent Showtime preems, in April the debut of "The Borgias" garnered slightly less than "Homeland." "Shameless" drew 982,000 in its January debut. "Homeland," starring Claire Danes, Damien Lewis and Mandy Patinkin, centers on a released prisoner of war who may have turned against the United States. The strong start for the skein is a boon to Showtime president David Nevins, as "Homeland" is the first scripted series to be greenlit by him after arriving from Imagine Entertainment. Show is exec produced by Alex Gansa, Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff, Michael Cuesta, Abi Nir and Ran Tellem. In returning series, Showtime's top-rating "Dexter" scored a healthy 2.2 million viewers at 9 p.m. Sunday in its sixth season debut, serving as a healthy lead-in to "Homeland." That's best of any "Dexter" season premiere, including a 24% increase from season five. When adding the 11 p.m and 1 a.m. showings, "Dexter" drew 2.7 million viewers. Both "Dexter" and "Homeland" should see substantial viewer increases with additional telecasts during the week. Showtime has yet to renew a deal with "Dexter" star and exec producer Michael C. Hall, and this strong start may give him leverage with the net. His current pact has expired and the net is currently negotiating with him for future seasons. PHOTOS: Modern Film & Television Comics Throughout yesteryear 2 yrs, as the radio industry has obsessed over formats along with a problematic rankings system that frequently does not precisely gauge audience amounts or census, podcasts from the comedy variety have prospered. Adam Carolla and Marc Maron lead those, following a pioneering path removed by Kevin Cruz, Ough Gervais and Jimmy Pardo. The amounts tell the storyline: Carolla, who avoid 15 marketplaces when his syndicated CBS Radio morning show was canceled last year, has accumulated a crowd 10 occasions as large together with his daily podcast. The Adam Carolla Show has drenched a lot more than 50 million downloads each year Maron's two times-weekly WTF reaches 20 million and counting. Both of them are offered free of charge, while aged episodes (like Maron's intense 2010 interview with Robin Williams) cost $1.99 at iTunes (nothing changes hands between your programs and Apple, but server space is down to show producers and may get pricey at about $10,000 per month). Cash begins flowing when listenership hits certain benchmarks and marketers come calling, which, based on Carolla, they've -- in a major way. "It's better than radio, high's a lot Baloney about cumes, time spent listening, people completing Arbitron journals with golf pens. ... With podcasts, you are able to tell the number of shows happen to be took in to, lower towards the click. That's better for that sponsors as well as for us." The good thing about the podcast is its simplicity: Anybody can buy a microphone and mixer, and also the price is nominal in comparison to some traditional radio program. "By having an investment of $700 to $1,000, you may make a show," states Maron, whose podcast regularly charts within the iTunes Top Ten and charges $1,000 to $15,000 per sponsor. The comedian conducts interviews in the garage of his La home, but he's rarely there nowadays as interest in his stand-up shows (which frequently be used as podcast-recording possibilities) has leaped by 50 %. "Who it serves best would be the people who don't fit a conventional broadcast model. Like, if George Carlin were 22 today, an amount he do? Most likely a podcast." Past the spoken word, the ripple effect may bring revenue from retailing, book deals (Carolla's NY Occasions best-seller In Half A Century We'll Be Chicks was launched this year, and Maron is focusing on his first book for Spiegel & Grau), apple iphone applications (after Apple and Google take 10 %, revenue is split 50-50 using the developer) and purchasers of comedy albums. Maron, within an ironic twist after being told last year to ride out his contract in the now defunct Air America, has came back to terrestrial radio through NPR, which pays to air edited versions of WTF.Presently, 13 public radio affiliate marketers carry the PRX version. New Girl
'New Girl'Credits: Shot in La by Meriwether Prods., Finkel Baer and Chernin Entertainment in colaboration with twentieth century Fox Television. Executive producers, Elizabeth Meriwether, Mike Kasdan, Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, Dork Finkel, Brett Baer producer, Bari Halle director, Kasdan author, MeriwetherWith: Zooey Deschanel, Mike Manley, Max Greenfield, Damon Wayans Junior., Hannah Simone. The amount of appreciation one stretches "New Girl" is going to be predicated mainly on viewers' a reaction to Zooey Deschanel's central character, and whether or not they find her winsomely cool and adorable, or occasionally irritating. In reality she's a little of both, but as Jess, the actress does project sweetness and vulnerability to choose her considerable eccentricities, just like the trio of men who adopt her like a roommate. Fox has not exactly set the planet ablaze with live-action half-hrs, but that one feels implanted with increased "Fox attitude" than most. Recently split up after walking in on her behalf boyfriend with another lady, Jess requires a new apartment. Still, she's an unlikely addition towards the digs occupied by Nick (Mike Manley), still smarting from their own break-up Schmidt (Max Greenfield), a lady's guy who thinks it is a winning maneuver to get rid of his shirt in the drop of the hat and Coach (Damon Wayans Junior.), a fitness expert with serious anger-management issues. (Wayans is going to be changed within the next episode by Lamorne Morris, after Wayans' existing program, ABC's "Happy Being," received an unpredicted renewal. In order to translate, "I was too cheap to reshoot the pilot.") Series creator Elizabeth Meriwether (who authored the romantic comedy "No Strings Attached") has peppered the show with great touches -- such as the jaunty title theme (consistent with the Jess character, who concocts little small-theme tunes about herself) Schmidt's pals creating a "douchebag jar" for each time he reacts like one and Jess consoling herself via repeated viewing of "Dirty Dancing." Oh, and did we occur to point out that the majority of her buddies -- beginning with best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) -- are models, that is what wins the dudes over to begin with? "New Girl" offers ample energy, even when it very quickly violates "Seinfeld's" old "No embracing, no learning" rule. On the other hand, heart is a component of their DNA -- just how much Jess' eccentricities (reached love a woman who quotes "The almighty from the Rings") and fragility will impact her roomies, and what kind of influence the men may have on her behalf as she braves the dating scene. Deschanel (whose sister Emily stars in Fox's "Bones") is definitely an acquired taste, but her wide-eyed enthusiasm -- offer especially good use within "500 Times of Summer time" -- must translate well to TV. The men are less distinctive, with Greenfield having probably the most potential simply due to his character's amusingly obnoxious streak. Scheduled Tuesdays, Fox provides its most promising half-hour having a solid launch pad behind "Glee," and showed some real persistence this past year by reviving the marginally ranked "Raising Hope," which returns as "Girl's" running mate. "New Girl" may need similar benevolence to completely find its stride, but at the minimum, it warrants to hold around lengthy enough to fill the douchebag jar.camera, Tim Suhrstedt production designer, Shaun Sage editor, Steve Welch music, Ludwig Goransson casting, Juel Bestrop, Seth Yanklewitz. 30 MIN. Pink Ribbons, Inc.
A National Film Board of Canada presentation. (International sales: National Film Board of Canada, Toronto). Produced by Ravida Din. Directed by Lea Pool. Written by Patricia Kearns, Nancy Guerin, Pool, based on "Pink Ribbons, Inc.: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy" by Samantha King. With: Barbara Ehrenreich, Samantha King, Susan Love, Maricela Ochoa, Kim McInerney, Nancy Brinker.Indignant, subversive and inflammatory, "Pink Ribbons, Inc." resoundingly pops the shiny pink balloon of the breast cancer movement/industry, debunking the "comfortable lies" and corporate double-talk that permeate the massive and thus-far-ineffectual campaign against a disease that claims nearly 60,000 lives each year in North America alone. Veteran helmer Lea Pool, working from Samantha King's book, won't be making any friends with her full-frontal attack on the corporate co-option of the breast cancer cause, which could limit Stateside circulation of this Canadian production. But there are plenty of women who'll want to see it. And they'll be seeing red, not pink. The thrust of King's thesis is that all the pink-themed walk-a-thons, parades, singing children and rose-lit monuments (the Empire State Building, Niagara Falls), actually do more harm than good. By putting a warm and fuzzy spin on the state of breast cancer, the public is distracted from some very ugly numbers: In 1940, a woman had a 1-in-22 chance of developing breast cancer; today, the number is one in eight. Only 20%-30% of women with breast cancer have high-risk factors, which means no one really knows what causes the disease. The leading foundations involved in funding cancer research are peopled by representatives of the pharmaceutical, chemical and energy industries, so their ethics are inherently compromised. The supposed beneficence of corporate-funded breast cancer campaigns often masks corporate guilt -- Yoplait, for instance, of the "Save Lids to Save Lives" campaign, had growth hormones in its yogurt until the company was embarrassed into taking them out; Estee Lauder has carcinogens in its cosmetics; the Ford Motor Co. virtually fills the atmosphere with suspicious chemicals. The single case that seems to outrage everyone in the film the most, perhaps because it's just so clueless, was a pink-bucket promotion by Kentucky Fried Chicken, in which -- as Breast Cancer Action chief Barbara Brenner puts it -- "the disconnect was shocking." Along with such commentators as author and cancer survivor Barbara Ehrenreich ("Nickled and Dimed"), Dr. Susan Love, Nancy Brinker of Susan G. Komen for the Cure (which has funneled $1.9 billion into fighting breast cancer and, as several people ask, for what?), the film also turns the spotlight over to ordinary cancer victims, one of whom puts the public-relations spin into very clear perspective. "The message," she says, "is that if you just try really hard, you can beat it. Just try really hard." Those who die, she adds, "weren't trying very hard." All of this, the interviewees agree, is a distraction from what are probably the environmental causes of breast cancer, including industrial pollution, estrogen-imitating pharmaceuticals, plastics and recombinant bovine growth hormones, which are commonly found in dairy and meat products. And, Pool emphasizes, even as corporations continue to contribute to the problem, they make PR hay with pink products and pink promotions (American Express takes it on the chin here for mounting one ballyhooed campaign that ended up donating only one penny per purchase to cancer research.) Pool structures her film conventionally, balancing scenes of pink-hued protests, products rallies and T-shirts with scathing interviews with knowledgeable experts on the subject, as well as people who know how to spin their company line. Pool lets the offenders dig their own rhetorical graves; the only time she goes overboard is in juxtaposing her revelatory information with scenes of pink-clad women at anti-cancer events, which only serves to mock some very well-intentioned activism. Those activists may well be rechanneling their energies once Pool's movie gets into circulation. Production values are fine, the interviews shot handsomely, with animation by Francis Gelinas adding a winsome touch to a tough movie.Camera (color), Daniel Jobin, Sylvaine Dufaux, Nathalie Moliavko-Visotzky; editor, Oana Suteu Khintirian; art director, Patrice Bengle; set decorator, Patrick Lee; sound, Claude La Haye, Yann Cleary, Thierry Morlaas-Lurbe, Sylvain Vary; sound designer, Claude Beaugrand; re-recording mixer, Jean Paul Vialard; associate producer, Nancy Guerin. It's official: Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV has sold 964,000 in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, easily enabling its No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart. It is his third No. 1 album following Tha Carter III and I Am Not a Human Being.our editor recommendsMTV Video Music Awards 2011: The NomineesLil Wayne on 'Tha Carter IV': 'I'm Glad' it LeakedLil' Wayne's 'Tha Carter IV' Track List Revealed STORY: Lil' Wayne Beats 'Watch the Throne': 'Carter IV' Breaks iTunes Single-Week Album Sales Record Carter IV earns the biggest sales week for a hip-hop album (or any set by a male artist), since his own Carter III bowed with 1.01 million on the June 28, 2008 chart. Carter IV also marks 2011's second-biggest frame, behind Lady Gaga's 1.11 million debut with Born This Way. Of course, Gaga's first week was bolstered by two days' worth of 99-cent sale pricing from AmazonMP3's store. Carter IV managed to sell nearly a million without such tactics. It's estimated that AmazonMP3 sold upwards of 440,000 downloads of its 99-cent Born This Way album. STORY: Lil' Wayne on 'Tha Carter IV': 'I'm Glad' it Leaked Speaking of downloads, Carter IV shifted 362,000 digital copies in its first week. That marks the second-largest digital sales week of all time for an album; again, behind Born This Way, with 662,000 downloads. However, while SoundScan does not disclose retailer-specific figures, sources say Carter easily broke the U.S. iTunes Store's single-week album sales record, with around 345,000 sold via iTunes. STORY: Lil' Wayne's 'Tha Carter IV': What the Critics are Saying Tha Carter IV is off to a fast start courtesy of both a hot single and an eve-of-release performance by Wayne on the highly rated MTV Video Music Awards telecast (Aug. 28). His "How to Love" single is his first top 10 hit as a lead artist on the Pop Songs chart since 2008 when "Lollipop" (Tha Carter III's first single) went to No. 5. "Love" is in fact only his second top 10 on the Pop Songs tally, after "Lollipop." Also, figure that the Carter name brand carries weight with fans, much in the same way the word "blueprint" makes Jay-Z aficionados take notice. He's had three Blueprint albums to date: All debuted at No. 1 with over 400,000 sold in their respective first weeks. A full recap of the week's top 10 selling albums and digital songs will follow tomorrow morning. Related Topics Lil Wayne

Ryan Reynolds and Willem Dafoe Do Tree of Life-Lite in Delayed Fireflies in the Garden
If Sean Penn didn’t love the abstract narrative Terrence Malick employed in Tree of Life, maybe he’ll dig the pretty-similar, much more conventional stuff in the long-delayed Fireflies in the Garden — a Tree of Life Lite starring Ryan Reynolds as a middle-aged man who returns to his Texas childhood home to deal with his strained relationship with his stern father (Willem Dafoe). Period flashbacks, memories of an angelic mother (Julia Roberts), and a pivotal death that inspires exploration into deep emotional scars? The only things missing are the cosmic clouds of particles laden with meaning. Would Penn approve? OK, fine. There are more differences between Fireflies in the Garden and Tree of Life than just the half hour of mesmerizingly pretentious art-swirls that turned all but the most dedicated art snobs off of Malick’s film. Like surly Ryan Reynolds, who’s still contractually obligated to crack jokes in this movie; at least they’re of the douchey-sarcastic type. And Julia Roberts in old lady makeup! Yeah… I’ll take Jessica Chastain as my small-town Texas mother-angel instead. VERDICT: See it if you didn’t get Tree of Life. [via Yahoo!] Watch Transformers 3 Dark Of The Moon

Bordertown
The opening titles explain that American corporations are using the North American Free Trade Agreement by opening large maquiladoras right across the United States–Mexico border. The maquiladoras hire mostly Mexican women to work long hours for little money in order to produce mass quantity products.
Lauren Adrian (Jennifer Lopez), an impassioned American news reporter for the "Chicago Sentinel" wants to be assigned to the Iraq front-lines to cover the war. Instead, her editor George Morgan (Martin Sheen) assigns her to investigate a series of slayings involving young maquiladora factory women in a Mexican bordertown.
Antonio Banderas as Diaz and Jennifer Lopez as Lauren Adrian discuss the murders.Worker Eva (Maya Zapata), originally from the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, takes a bus to go back to her shanty-town home after work. After a while she is the last passenger still in the bus. The driver asks her if she minds if he goes to a gas station to fill up, and Eva agrees. However, he takes her to a remote place and assaults and rapes her, together with another man, who then tries to strangle her. The two men, believing her dead, bury her alive. With the little energy she has left, Eva escapes.
Adrian heads to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, on the U.S.-Mexico border to investigate the murders, hoping that if she does well she'll be assigned to Iraq by Morgan. In Juárez, she meets up with Diaz (Antonio Banderas), whom she had been working with six years before, and who is the editor for the local newspaper El Sol de Juárez. She also meets Eva.
The three try to find the two killers and have them prosecuted. For this purpose she starts working in the factory, in order to act as bait on the bus ride. The driver tries to assault her in the same way he did Eva, and although police assistance has been arranged, they are at the wrong place. She manages to escape her attacker. Later Diaz gets shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Eva changes her mind and does not want to testify any more for fear of revenge, and tries to flee to the US, together with others in the trunk of a car. She gets caught and is sent back. Adrian convinces her to testify after all. For political reasons the Chicago Sentinel refuses to publish Adrian's story. Adrian quits and becomes the editor for El Sol de Juárez.
